This week an Italian described their country to me as “Third World”. I may only be a visitor, but I could not agree less. Italy possesses almost everything I want out of life – good weather, delicious food, stylish clothes, amazing wine and a slower pace – although, alas, not good Internet access, in the hotels we’ve chosen at least. For the last three days I have been struggling to upload enough photographs to illustrate my account of the Boboli Gardens in Florence. Now, exasperated, I am officially giving up and waiting until I get home. It’s either a chance to visit the Botanical Gardens here in Siena, or another afternoon staring at the whirling beachball of doom. You will understand it was not a hard choice.
I will be glad to get home tomorrow, swapping 38ºC of heat for a more familiar 18ºC. One can have enough of a good thing. Please know I have not disappeared from the face of the earth and will be back again soon. Meanwhile there are lots of little updates on Instagram and my Facebook Page.

I’ve only been to the botanical gardens in Florence. Nice to be reminded of the visit!
We didn’t make it there as our weekend in Florence was packed with activity already. I suspect Florence is slightly more impressive than Siena, which was pleasant but fairly basic.
We didn’t get to Siena, so what you makes me glad we stayed in Florence.
I meant the botanic gardens! I’m afraid I greatly preferred Siena overall. Both amazing cities though.

Yes Dan my friend is in Rome right now and having the same problems! Stockpile your photos and articles and give us some good news on your return…god knows we need it back home right now….BOJO just been appointed Foreign Secretaray by May!!! Maybe it’s not too late to stay there!!!
I’d use any excuse to stay frankly, although I am not sure my waistline could stand even another week!

I have fond memories of the gardens when I was in Florence years ago. The number of fountains were just mind boggling. Happy travels!

I am just back and don’t know whether to laugh or cry at my Jurassic Park style garden and Lost World greenhouse. I couldn’t even get to the front door when I arrived. Don’t know where to start!! I’ve watered the parched bits, any ideas what I should tackle next?
Deep breath and slowly, slowly. Keep focused on one area and do that not getting distracted by other its. It is early in the season, things will recover after a chop. Otherwise your head might whizz right off adding to the mess! Good luck and may the force be with you. You will be back in control in no time. x
You are so wise Gill. I’m afraid I normally go on the attack, trying to get everything done at once, which of course doesn’t work. So I am going around semi-calmly in a clockwise direction from the front door. If I were as wise as you I would have not opened the garden this year as I think that and the building project combined was a bit over ambitious!
It is easy to be wise about someone else’s garden! I am sure you would be just the same. 🙂 It is good to think big, please don’t stop! x
