Last weekend went by like a whirlwind – so much to catch up on whilst September flew away on the breeze. It was good to reacquaint myself with both both our plots, but also to visit one of our favourite local gardens, Goodnestone Park, where the gravel garden was at its zenith. Fine grasses towered above our heads, punctuated by bright helianthus and wine-red sanguisorbas. Amid all the exotica was our native teasel, Dipsacus fullonum, much beloved of goldfinches. Teasel may be common, but it forms the most incredible seedheads, as elegant and avant-garde as a Philip Treacy hat.

When we lived in Bristol we grew a giant teasel. We watched the finches feed from the upstairs bathroom. We brought seed with us and now North Devon have prodigy of Big T in various places. None have quite made the grade yet ……
