These pretty primrose pompoms belong to vigorous climbing rose Rosa banksiae ‘Lutea’. Hailing from the mountains of China, it’s not 100% hardy in the UK, but worth experimenting with if you have a sheltered wall or large tree that needs brightening up. The emerging flowers and foliage are easily scorched by gales or late frosts (we’ve had a double whammy this year), and sparrows seem to find the buds completely delicious, gleefully picking them off one by one in front of our eyes.
Looks very delicious indeed!
