The Butanese have 13 traditional arts and crafts, known collectively as Zorig Chusum. These are supported by all levels of society and are integral to every Butanese home. Strict conventions exist around the designs, which are carefully observed. However artists can express their personality through the execution of minor details. Below, year 4 art students at the National Institute for Zorig Chusum have created this magnificent dragon using real fish scales to decorate its writhing body. Truly terrifying!

Exquisite! I wonder how much time took them to complete the dragon?!
Judging by the general pace of things here, I imagine it took months! It’s wonderful to be in a place where all the crafts are ‘living’. They’re not preserved for tourists’ benefit, but part of everyday culture. Tourists just get the left overs!
